My learning partner's goal is to pass the G.E.D. or high school equivalency test. The Raleigh Library has a G.E.D. test preparation book available for loan at the reference desk. I give them my library card and they allow us to use the book while we are in the library.
While the vocabulary is difficult in most of the examples and even in the instructions, Liz has had success on the practice quizzes. I read aloud the sections about different types of test questions and then together we read the sample questions and work through the multiple choice answers.
We have learned that we don't have to already know a lot of facts, we mostly just have to figure out what they are asking and find the answer in the material provided. In one example they provided a chart comparing talk show hosts on a scale of acidity! Even though Liz and I knew nothing about the scale from "base" to "acidic" we figured out the answers.
Don't be intimidated by the big test prep book. Together, you can move through it and gain confidence.
